What is a Scale & Polish?
A scale & polish is when we give your teeth a thorough clean to break up any tough bits of plaque or tartar. This nicely complements your everyday oral hygiene routine and can tackle the stubborn bits that conventional brushing alone will struggle with.
Why Would I Need A Scale & Polish?
It is recommended that you have a hygiene appointment (scale & polish) at the same frequency as your regular check ups (every 6 months). Your dentist may recommend more frequent visits, subject to your current oral hygiene.
Its important to tackle the build up of plaque/tartar, because if left untreated they can lead to cavities (holes in teeth), irritation to the gums (gum disease/periodontitis), and in the worst case scenario, tooth loss.
Scale & Polish Procedure
Scale & polishes are a fairly straight forward appointment that falls under the routine dental care umbrella. The length of the appointment can vary depending on your oral hygiene needs. If you are suffering with gum disease, it can be expected that you require longer oral hygiene appointments to achieve dental health again.
The first part of the treatment is where the clinician will scrape (scale) the deposits of plaque/tartar away. It will feel strange, but not painful as your clinician is doing this. If you are a nervous patient, please let your treating clinician know and they will work at a slower pace to suit your needs. The second part of the appointment will be to polish the surfaces of your teeth. This will make your teeth feel smooth and can help with minor imperfections and minor stains. For more thorough staining, teeth whitening is available to give the overall aesthetics of your teeth a lift.
